I visited the French Quarters in New Orleans about 20 years ago. There you could see all kinds of homeless sleeping on the public benches, with their dogs. Pets are so VERY unconditional in their love of their master, and provide comffort, and security, when they don't have anyone or anything to do it for them otherwise.

People have an inborn requirement for love through the animal world. Every one needs and should (to be a complete human being) own an animal.
This world dose not prepare persons to be responsible for and carry through on their comittments.
A person who comes to a station such as this and asks for in-put on how to care for the animals health needs should be encouraged. Learning all there is to know about your animal freind and how to care for its health and well being , is your self is a prime responsibility.
The vet should be the last recourse after you have exhausted your mind, heart, and enery, to care for it yourself.
Most of us who are life long animal husbanders can give you so much info on health care outside the vet ,that it would be rediculouse not to ask!
Most of us also know when to tell you to take it to the vet and will not hesitate to do so,
Find a "farm vet" and develoup a working relationship with him. Many will answere questions by phone, if you sound like you know what you are doing. Also they understand the fact that the animal is not a child and has a limit is to be set on expense. Also the "farm" rather than "pet" vet generaly is much more versed in alternative and exceptional effort proceedures.
Pet vets have been cought up with the ideah that they can charge as much as you would pay for a child and get away with it. They use emptional manipulation to gain money, and generaly do unnessesary proceedures, over vaccinate to the detriment of your animals long term life, and through a lot of hokey stories, convince you to protect from things your animal will never encounter. the more you know the more you will be able to care for your animal partner responsibly.

Because they are too cheap and lazy to do the right thing! There is no excuse.

I too am tired of reading the whining at this site by persons who want "home remedies" and a cheap, quick fix rather than do the right thing. If one can afford a cell phone, a pizza, or new shoes, then one can afford an office visit. Many vets will arrange monthly payments. There are also many internet sites such as these:
        or

There is no excuse for not providing proper care for a living being. Animal Control agrees for when authorized they will remove an animal from a home if it cannot provide proper care - as will Child Protective Services for a child!

It's just sheer thoughtlessness and laziness and excuse-making. There are many resources; more now than ever before. I've been unemployed before due to downsizing and always managed to care for all my animals I had at the time - with no second income as backup either or help from any family.

They weren't thinking when they bought it. They probably got it when it was really young and cute, so it was an impulse buy. Unfortunately, the pet has to deal with the owners not being able to take them for check-ups. If you love your pet you should take care of it no matter what.
